In a recent conversation with the well-known publication ScreenCrush, famed wrestler John Cena shared thoughts regarding the complexity of filming wrestling movies, his personal favorite wrestling film, and further insights.
Here’s a glimpse of the intriguing details grabbed from the conversation:
Speaking about the intricacies involved in creating a wrestling-based film, Cena stated, “These are thought-provoking questions. Possibly the reason could be the misunderstood notions people had or perhaps the protective secrecy that the industry seemed to maintain. Now, much of that secrecy has been unmasked. As we witness abundant behind-the-scenes footage from WWE, and an increase in documentary production, the information dissemination is vast. The more stories that gain public attention, the more it sparks concepts for movies and series.”
When asked to name his top wrestling movie, Cena replied, “There are indeed a few that are genuinely good. I was particular impressed by The Wrestler. It resonated deeply, being saturated with sorrow and emotion. I recall my early days in the independent circuit, wrestling with several seasoned professionals. The movie reminded me of the onset of my career. It allowed me some retrospective romance while appreciating a fantastic performance by Mickey Rourke. Upon its release, while I was in WWE, people often asked my opinion on The Wrestler. I found it a melancholic film. It could be equally impactful if named The Rockstar or The Baseball Player, but I was pleased that they chose wrestling as a platform to narrate their story. It resulted in a commendable wrestling movie. When one nails it, it triggers thoughts of, “If they can do it, so can we.” Iron Claw is another one recently launched, and it was marvellous. The wrestling world, particularly WWE, is like a treasure chest of narratives. Who knows what bright prospects lie therein!”
