John Cena had a blast walking into the proverbial lion’s den at ECW One Night Stand 2006, according to his opponent on the night Rob Van Dam.

In the main event of the show, Cena was universally booed by the ECW crowd who watched on as Van Dam defeated John to win the WWE Championship.

On a recent edition of his “1 Of A Kind” podcast, Van Dam reflected on Cena getting booed at the show and believes John relished in it. He said,

“I think Cena enjoyed it. He enjoyed working with the crowd, I think, either way. I can’t speak for him. I know getting cheers can be a lot more fun than getting boos, but sometimes, some of the guys don’t even care, or they get boos all the time, and that’s what their deal is, so that’s what they want.

“I can’t say for sure, but I know he knew what he was in for that night, and he was ready for it. But I didn’t know what that meant…I didn’t know it was going to have a shirt-throwing contest. That was great. I was laughing cause I was like ‘Oh my god…nobody wants the shirt.’ I was like ‘Man, this crowd is f*****g awesome.’ That was all so real.”

Rob Van Dam would hold the title for three weeks before losing the gold to Edge. Days before the title loss, RVD and Sabu would be arrested for marijuana possession.

Cena would regain the championship at that year’s Unforgiven pay-per-view event. He would hold the title for over a year before being stripped of the gold due to an injury in late 2007.
