On a recent episode of the “WIRED” podcast, WWE star John Cena opened up about his tradition of wearing dog tags during his entrances before his matches.
During his conversation, Cena shared, “That happened a while ago. It was an accessory that I liked to don. The tradition has evolved over the years. Admirers were used to present me with rubber wristbands carrying motivational quotes or messages such as, ‘Hey, I just crafted this.’ I would incorporate them into my shoestrings. I would march into bouts with approximately 100 rubber bands on each foot. If an aficionado handed me one ahead of a performance, it would be added.”
Cena further clarified, “The dog tags would bear the monikers of my parents and siblings. It was my subtle way of saying, ‘Hey, you guys are accompanying me.’ I didn’t excel at being a progeny or a sibling. Instead of adorning this item they could see on the television, I began to replace it with presence. I’m attempting to be more prolific in showing up. Discarded the dog tags for more focused time.”
