On a recent episode of the “Insight with Chris Van Vliet” podcast, Joe Hendry, a professional wrestler with TNA Wrestling, delved into his memorable 2016 match with Kurt Angle that took place in WCPW. He also shared the process of developing his character for TNA, among other topics.
Key moments from the podcast discussion are highlighted below:
Concerning his past bout with Kurt Angle in WCPW, Hendry recalls, “I can’t believe I actually went through with it. A fan asked me who I’d like to wrestle with and I tagged Kurt Angle in my response, not expecting anything. He actually sent me a direct message in 2015, acknowledging who I was even without much fame at the time. I was in a viral entrance, dressed in a zorb as Henry Ball. And Kurt told me I wasn’t ready yet but someday the match might be possible.”
Hendry also narrated how the match finally happened. He said, “I told the WhatCulture boardroom that I could bring in Kurt Angle, but only on the condition that I would be allowed to wrestle with him and then become a top guy. They agreed.”
In terms of his character development in TNA, Hendry explained, “Before joining TNA, I had the gimmick, but lacked the character. However, I did create unique entrance songs that the audience loved. My actual television character as Joe Hendry was developed in TNA.”
Several people have contributed to Hendry finding his character but he singled out Eric Young first. “Eric and I first met during a show in Germany, a few weeks before I joined TNA. He gave me insights into how to approach my character. TNA management also worked closely with me, which has been a fantastic learning journey.”
