During a recent episode of his podcast, “Grilling JR,” WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross talked about various subjects, including the possibility of AEW collaborating with WWE.
Here are few key points from the podcast:
Referring to a potential crossover between AEW and WWE, Ross said, “It’s difficult to envision it, yet, no situation is impossible. However, it’s something I can hardly wrap my head around right now. I sense WWE will welcome other partners and tenants into their space. But making it a long-term arrangement might be far-fetched. However, I believe it’s an excellent idea. Wrestling fans crave novelty and change. There are minimal available noteworthy talents. You just have to look everywhere, and who wouldn’t be interested in moving to WWE or AEW? Because they offer steady work and good pay.”
Regarding WWE’s relationship with TNA to display they are no monopoly, Ross commented, “If you can shield yourself from monopoly accusations, that’s beneficial. And it also allows you to acquire some fresh talent. Most of those talents they are working with would love a full-time gig. WWE is the ultimate goal for many of these guys from smaller promotions or independents. AEW is another fantastic option for these fellows.”
Ross also praised Tony Khan’s skill in building his roster saying, “Tony Khan has done commendable work in assembling his lineup. AEW’s roster, with the addition of Mercedes Mone and Okada, is well-stacked. They got fantastic performers. The storytelling is subjective, some will appreciate it, some won’t. Yet players are in place who can carry out the game plans.”
The conversation ended with Ross noting that he is excited to do commentary on the next AEW’s PPV because it gives up-and-coming stars a chance to shine, which can help them make a breakthrough impress to the audience. That’s what both companies are aiming for right now, giving their talent a chance to take the spotlight. He concludes, “that’s the same for everybody. Everybody’s looking for their chance to break through and make an impression.”
