During a recent episode of the “Grilling JR” podcast, AEW commentator Jim Ross delved into numerous subjects. Notably, he spoke about WWE putting the brakes on Billy Gunn’s solo career development in 1999.
The highlights from Ross’s podcast can be found below:
When asked why Gunn did not nab the King of the Ring title in 1999, Ross said, “I honestly can’t say. It’s a pertinent question that you pose, but I’m not privy to the reasons behind that decision. Possibly, the verdict was reached at the eleventh hour and they may have thought they were a bit hasty. Perhaps we didn’t have the right opponent up against him. Or maybe Billy was just not quite ripe for this opportunity at that moment.”
Ross, however, disagreed with that perspective. “I feel we could have extracted more from Billy Gunn’s talent that was merited,” he stated. “We rarely come across anyone who looks as good as him, with his strength, speed and physique. He surely knows the ins and outs of the business. Despite having all the attributes, for reasons unknown, the management never instilled the faith in Billy that he likely deserved.”
Regarding whether the King of the Ring concept had lost its charm by 1999, Ross shared, “I honestly don’t believe so. It may have been with us for some time, but I don’t think its appeal has waned, Connie. I believe it largely depends on the participants, their competitors, and the quality of their performance. So, I strongly believe that it hasn’t lost its allure.”
