In a recent episode of his podcast “The Snake Pit,” WWE Hall of Fame inductee, Jake Roberts, shared his thoughts on why the Steel Cage Match holds the crown as the most intriguing specialty match in professional wrestling.
Here are some notable points from his discussion.
Roberts expressed his preference for the best specialty match, saying, “Well, in my opinion, nothing beats the beauty of a cage match, until they botched it by letting wrestlers escape from the cage. Let’s rewind to when the cage was a new concept in wrestling. It generally provided a circumstance where the babyface had a hard time laying hands on the heel. To retain the title, the heel would often run, escape, accept a disqualification, you name it. And if the aim was to halt that or avoid external disturbance, then a cage would be the perfect solution. This implies there has to be a victor. It’s a fight till the end. But regrettably, they blotted their copybook by allowing wrestlers to flee from the cage.”
Speaking about the die-hard fans at the Long Island Coliseum, Roberts remarked, “Indeed, the ruthlessness of the applause was harsh on the players. The spectators were savage at that place. They would hurl anything and everything at you. Including batteries…those were agonising. Just try catching one of those with your head, then tell me how you feel.”
