Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, as a WWE Superstar, experienced innumerable bumps over his wrestling career. However, he puts down the rough after-effects he felt to the nature of the WWE’s rings.
In a recent episode of his podcast “The Snake Pit,” Roberts shared his experience joining the erstwhile-WWF during the 1980s, as well as his thoughts on the stiffness of the rings. In reflection, he stated:
“Vince stated at the time ‘Make them extremely stiff, man’… I’ve experienced some rigid rings in my time, but the WWF’s rings were far beyond that. They were absolutely solid… We would often joke around and say ‘Take a bump outside. Even the concrete is softer.’”
The unforgiving stiff nature of WWE rings has been acknowledged by many wrestlers over the years, alluding to the fact that the discomfort caused was equal to the pain inflicted by the wrestling moves executed in the ring.
Another Honoree of the WWE Hall of Fame, The Undertaker, has previously commented that McMahon did not make the rings any softer until 1998. This was when he himself started actively participating in matches and taking hits.
Roberts last put up a fight for WWE in 1996, with him being welcomed back by the franchise in 2014 to be honored with an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
The conversation can be seen in the latest episode of “The Snake Pit” titled ‘The Summer of ’86’.
