In a recent episode of his “The Snake Pit” podcast, Jake Roberts revealed the circumstances in which WWE enlisted the services of Buster Douglas for The Main Event III.
Initially, the plan was to bring in Mike Tyson for the show, but this changed in the wake of Buster Douglas’ knockout victory over him two weeks before the event. This unexpected win saw Douglas transition from boxing heavyweight champion to guest referee for the much-anticipated main event, taking over Tyson’s intended role.
Bear in mind a few noteworthy points from the podcast below:
Regarding rumours about Mike Tyson’s participation, Roberts said in the podcast: “I was totally taken by surprise. Man. That seemed a remote possibility to me. I mean, Tyson was an absolute sensation at the time. He was way beyond any imagination. For him to step into the wrestling ring was a massive victory, man. Major kudos to Vince for pulling that off.”
Discussing the remuneration Douglas received for his participation, which amounted to 0,000, Robert expressed: “It’s quite frustrating, man, because here we were, travelling non-stop, working seven days a week, even twice on weekends, for long stretches of 50-60 days. And this joker comes along for a single night’s ‘work’. I doubt he even broke a sweat. Getting 100 grand for it — it’s just — it feels like such an insult.”
