Welcome to another installment of the eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
Recently, it was announced by Triple H that there will be a wrestling tournament scheduled to crown a WWE Speed Women’s Champion, with its premiere slated on September 4th. Upon hearing this news, Chelsea Green responded by expressing her desire to transform this speed tournament into a revival of the defunct WWE Divas Championship. This is not the first time Green has expressed enthusiasm about bringing back the WWE Divas title.
Chelsea Green tweeted: “Oh goody, I can turn the speed tournament into the diva tournament.” -@ImChelseaGreen on Twitter, August 10, 2024.
Today’s question for our readers is: “Should WWE introduce a women’s speed title, or consider reviving the divas title, or has there been an excessive concentration of belts already?” Join the discussion in the comments below.
Speaking from my perspective, the introduction of the WWE Speed Championship has been met with less enthusiasm compared to the 24/7 Championship. There seems to be a lack of investment and interest in this championship. Its presence is rarely referenced during RAW or SmackDown, paths where it could build traction. Although The Speed Championship has been acknowledged in NXT feuds, such as those involving Nathan Frazer and Axiom, NXT does not hold as much popularity—leading many fans to be unaware of notable NXT talent when they transition to Raw and SmackDown.
Consequently, introducing a women’s division into the Speed Championship seems futile. Historically, women’s championships have struggled with drawing in consistent viewership. Further, I find the revival of the Divas Championship unnecessary while a women’s midcard title could present a fresh and exciting opportunity as previously discussed on eWrestlingNews.
Ultimately, if theSpeed Championship is to remain as an X platform 3-minute match thing, then it must retain the characteristic of being a ‘speed’ championship. Reinstating the Divas Championship under the speed variant wouldn’t work due to its misalignment with the ‘speed’ gimmick and its probable relegation to X. Furthermore, if the Divas Championship were to make a comeback, it should be showcased in RAW and SmackDown instead.
I appreciate Chelsea Green’s stance and share her sentiment about the potential for a Divas Championship return if utilized with a gimmick twist. But at this point, surprisingly, my preference leans toward the “WWE Speed Women’s Championship” rather than the “WWE Divas Championship on WWE Speed.”
