In an interview with Getting Over, Bryan Danielson discussed wanting to work the NJPW G1 tournament.
The tournament is known to be tough on wrestlers due to the demanding schedule and quality of matches expected. This is something Danielson knows could be irresponsible for him to do at this stage.
“I don’t know. Sometimes, I have delusions of doing the G1. I think that’s what they are. I think they’re delusions in the sense of, that’s something I’ve wanted to do forever and ever and ever. I’ve never been able to do it. ‘This year would be the year to do it,’ except, is it? By the time the next G1 rolls around, I’ll be 43, and with how many injuries…that’s a big part of why I want to step away from full-time wrestling too. To do this, I love doing this, but it’s not worth the expense of my health later on in life. I’ve already had enough injuries as it is. Right now, I feel like the injuries that I’ve had are manageable in the sense of long-term. I’m constantly doing stuff for my neck so that my neck isn’t bad when I’m 70. The concussion stuff, I do my best, but all of us, we’re just hoping for the best. We don’t know. There is no concrete science on it. I think now, doing a G1, might be a little irresponsible of me, in comparison to what my overall long-term goals are, which is being there for my kids and there for my family.“

Bryan Danielson Discusses the Challenges of Participating in NJPW’s G1 Tournament
In a recent interview with Getting Over, professional wrestler Bryan Danielson opened up about his desire to participate in the New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) G1 tournament. However, he also acknowledged the potential risks and responsibilities that come with such a demanding event.
The G1 tournament is widely regarded as one of the most grueling and physically demanding tournaments in professional wrestling. Wrestlers are required to compete in multiple matches over a short period, often facing some of the best talent in the industry. The tournament’s rigorous schedule and high-quality matches can take a toll on the participants’ bodies and overall well-being.
Danielson, who has had his fair share of injuries throughout his career, expressed concerns about the impact that participating in the G1 tournament could have on his long-term health. At 43 years old, he recognizes that his body may not be able to withstand the physical demands of such a challenging event.
The wrestler emphasized that his decision to step away from full-time wrestling is driven by a desire to prioritize his health and be there for his family, particularly his children. While he loves the sport and appreciates the opportunity to compete, he believes that risking his health for the sake of participating in the G1 tournament may not align with his long-term goals.
Danielson’s comments shed light on the importance of considering the potential consequences of participating in physically demanding events, especially as athletes age and accumulate injuries. The wrestler acknowledges that he already manages his existing injuries to ensure they do not worsen over time, particularly focusing on his neck to prevent long-term damage.
Concussions, another prevalent concern in professional wrestling, also weigh heavily on Danielson’s mind. Despite taking precautions, he acknowledges that there is no definitive science on the long-term effects of concussions and that wrestlers can only hope for the best.
While Danielson’s desire to compete in the G1 tournament is understandable, his decision to prioritize his health and family is commendable. It serves as a reminder that athletes, regardless of their passion for their sport, must make responsible choices to protect their well-being and future quality of life.
