Io Shirai Pins Mercedes Martinez, Retains NXT Women’s Title At NXT TakeOver: WarGames

“The Empress of the Sky” took flight at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
Io Shirai retained the NXT Women’s Championship on Sunday night when she defeated Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez in a Triple Threat Match.
In a chaotic match, Shirai dove off a lighting rig onto her opponents. Storm nearly took the win when she hit Storm Zero, the move that won her the NXT UK Women’s Championship, on Martinez. In the end, Shirai hit her signature moonsault on Martinez to win the match and retain the gold.

Martinez had been hoping to win the match to culminate her 20-year journey in the business. Instead, Shirai’s title reign is still intact.
