On a recent edition of his “Grilling JR” podcast, AEW broadcaster Jim Ross discussed the brief wrestling career of El Gigante (Jorge Gonzalez) and how the former NBA athlete didn’t understand the nuances of wrestling.

Ross said, “Jorge is a sweetheart, a nice guy, but he had no product knowledge. He didn’t understand the nuances of the wrestling business. Sometimes, you need to know what not to do, and he didn’t have that trait. [Even] locking up was a big deal, and I had to work with him for hours on doing promos. I didn’t lose my patience in front of him, but it wasn’t good. He just had no feel. He had a decent personality, but he just didn’t have a feel for the product. And wrestling fans have always been smart — when they see somebody that’s unskilled, they don’t react well to that.”

On a recent edition of the “Insight” podcast, AEW wrestler Ethan Page discussed his angle with The Hardys on AEW television and praised Matt and Jeff for being selfless athletes.

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On Matt Hardy: “I feel like there are people in wrestling that, they might be nice and they’re very friendly and cordial. But when it comes down to the business part of things, most people are very selfish. Whereas I feel like with Matt, he cares more about delivering a good story instead of benefiting himself.”

On how Matt Hardy would look out for him during their angle on AEW Dark: Elevation: “He would always look out for me. He would always make sure that I benefited in anything that we did, and that’s kind of rare in wrestling, so I will appreciate that from Matt for the remainder of my career, and I’ll love that dude forever.”

On how Jeff Hardy lives for his fans: “Jeff lives for the fans. They love the connection with the fans, they love putting on a show for the fans … Those guys genuinely love it.”

The wrestling world is filled with athletes who have made a successful transition from other sports. However, not every athlete is able to adapt to the unique nuances of professional wrestling. One such example is Jorge Gonzalez, also known as El Gigante, who had a brief wrestling career and struggled to understand the intricacies of the business.

In a recent episode of his podcast “Grilling JR,” AEW broadcaster Jim Ross shed light on Gonzalez’s wrestling career. Ross described him as a “sweetheart” and a “nice guy,” but pointed out that he lacked product knowledge and didn’t grasp the subtleties of the wrestling industry. According to Ross, even basic moves like locking up were a challenge for Gonzalez, and he had to spend hours working on promos with him. Ross emphasized that wrestling fans are discerning and can easily spot unskilled performers, leading to a negative reaction.

While Gonzalez may have struggled in the wrestling world, there are other athletes who have seamlessly transitioned and made a positive impact. AEW wrestler Ethan Page recently discussed his experience working with The Hardys on AEW television and praised Matt and Jeff Hardy for their selflessness and dedication to delivering compelling stories.

Page highlighted Matt Hardy’s commitment to creating engaging narratives rather than solely focusing on personal gain. He mentioned that Matt always looked out for him and ensured that he benefited from their angles together. Page expressed gratitude for Matt’s rare selflessness in the wrestling industry and stated that he would appreciate him for the rest of his career.

When it comes to Jeff Hardy, Page emphasized that he genuinely loves his fans and thrives on the connection he has with them. He mentioned that Jeff and Matt both enjoy putting on a show for their fans, and their passion for wrestling shines through in their performances.

While athletes like Jorge Gonzalez may struggle to adapt to the world of professional wrestling, there are others like Matt and Jeff Hardy who excel in the industry due to their dedication, selflessness, and love for their fans. These athletes serve as inspirations for aspiring wrestlers and remind us of the importance of understanding the nuances of the wrestling business.
