Hikaru Shida has reigned over All Elite Wrestling’s women’s division for more than a year, and at the upcoming AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view, she’ll defend her title against Dr. Britt Baker. Ahead of the match, Shida spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso about her upcoming bout, and she explained why she believes it’ll be a special one.
“This match is going to be one of the toughest and most emotional matches in AEW history,” Shida said. “Those are two very important elements for a great match. And after it is over, I’ll celebrate my win with all fans at Double or Nothing.”
Shida also spoke about the idea of being in pursuit of a title, and how the chase to constantly defend her belt motivates her. The reigning champion said that the moments after a loss are often the most important, and that she’s excited to finally show off her skills as the champion in front of a crowded arena.
“The most important moments in pro wrestling are the ones after a loss,” said Shida. “When I show how I stand again after a tough loss, I think people will understand me better. However, this Double or Nothing is the first time to wrestle in a full arena as the champion for me, and I’ve retained this title until now for this moment.”
