On a recent episode of the “Von Erich” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer, Bill Goldberg, took part in a heart-to-heart conversation about the ongoing challenge of preserving the memory of earlier wrestling superstars among modern fan bases.
Goldberg didn’t hold back from acknowledging occasions when his opponents were unintentionally hurt during their in-ring clashes, subtly hinting at a notorious past event involving Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart.
Goldberg expressed, “Hey mate, have you noticed how swiftly folks appeared to forget about my dominance in the ring? My trend of entering, annihilating my opponent, and then making my exit? Could these fools even imagine surviving in the ring with me? The tendency of erasing one’s wrestling entity rather swiftly is ironic to me. The current and upcoming generations largely base their knowledge and opinions on digital narratives. It’s truly unfortunate that these imbeciles are unable to comprehend the fervor that would surge when my entrance theme would blare, when I exhaled smoke from my nostrils, leaving them guessing if the other guy was genuinely in pain. And that’s the delicate balance you have to maintain in this business. Regrettably, there were a couple of instances, Steiner, and the unfortunate incident where I accidentally kicked another wrestler in the head, but these incidents occur in our industry. It’s a tough business. Unless there’s malevolent intent, you should switch careers if you can’t get over an accidental punch or slap. Today’s environment is just different, and that’s a reality.”
The infamous event referred to took place during the 1999 Starrcade match, where Goldberg unintentionally kicked Hart, causing a concussion that tragically forced ‘The Hitman’ into premature retirement.
