In a recent episode of the “Gabby AF” podcast, WWE producer, Shane “The Hurricane” Helms shared his discomfort with the term “celebrity wrestlers.” He views every wrestler as a celebrity given their constant TV appearances.
Helms’ comments include, “When celebrities get involved, some folks have opinions. But let’s remember, WrestleMania was built on that. I’m not convinced it’s a bad thing. Wrestlers, I believe, are celebrities too. We’re as much on TV as anyone else. I’m not fond of the term ‘Celebrity Wrestling.’ We’re stars as well. I’ve signed autographs on six continents. There are numerous TV stars who aren’t recognizable there.”
Also, during a recent appearance on the “Rewind Recap Relive” podcast, Ken Anderson, also known as Mr. Kennedy, shared his regret about a promo he gave after winning the Money in the Bank briefcase at WrestleMania 23.
Anderson wished to use his catchphrase “Guess it’s true, nice guys do finish last, lucky for me, I’m an ahole,”, but it was denied.
Anderson expressed that, “That promo stands out as one of my most regrettable moments in wrestling. When I first joined WWE, Vince inquired if I had any catchphrases. I proposed, ‘Nice guys finish last, thank God I’m an ahole.' But that was just the start of the PG era. Profanity was prohibited. So on the day, Michael Hayes advised me to give an after-match promo, expecting an Austin-3:16 moment. So, I planned to say: 'Nice guys finish last. Thank God I'm an ahole.’ I was told to check first. When I did, it was disallowed. If you’re told no, it can’t be done. Now looking at TNA, I did use it, and it clicked. Fans chanted, ‘We are aholes.’
With the backing of WWE, I feel it could have been special.”
