During a recent episode of “The Ariel Helwani Show,” revered WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg offered his take on John Cena’s notable heel turn on WWE Elimination Chamber: Toronto. Goldberg compared it to the shocking heel turn of Hulk Hogan in 1996 when he aligned with the New World Order (nWo).

Key points from Goldberg’s discussion on the popular podcast are highlighted below:

Discussing how John Cena’s heel turn mirrors Hulk Hogan’s, Goldberg said, “I firmly believe Cena’s transition is closely analogous to Hogan’s heel turn. I had the opportunity to do the same, but I chose not to. This was at a time when I lacked understanding of the industry’s intricacies. For me, it meant more to bring joy to the Make-A-Wish kid in my changing room the very night I was wrestling ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, who was convalescing post-surgery. Being asked to turn heel was a significant proposition. Judging by what they’re accomplishing with Cena’s character, had I agreed, it would have created an immense impact.”

He also reflected on the reasons why John Cena’s heel turn has generated significant attention; “Before Cena carved his identity in WWE, I was the one fulfilling wishes in WCW. People viewed my wrestling persona as a stark contrast to my real self. Inside the ring, I had the reputation of an intimidating force. But outside it, let me cradle your baby and light up with a smile, and I promise a priceless memory. Cena’s shift in character has been executed brilliantly, and there’s no denying that. Accolades to everyone involved in the process and also to John for recognizing the immense potential of this decision.”

John Cena is set up to challenge Cody Rhodes for the much-coveted Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.

Goldberg also had an attention-grabbing discussion about his retirement match in 2025 and his response to recent backlash from wrestlers and fans alike. Check out the video below for the entire conversation.
