In a recent episode of the “WrestleBinge” podcast, ex-WWE champion Gangrel spoke candidly about the genesis of The Brood, an innovation credited to Vince Russo.
During the interview, below are a few key moments:
Discussing Vince Russo’s role in the inception of The Brood, Gangrel recalls, “I believe Halloween enthusiast Vince Russo deserves the plaudits. He reached out to me and asked, ‘Are you able to revive the vampire persona? Are the fangs still intact?’ To which I replied, ‘Sure, I can make it work.’ I received the phone call on a Friday from him, and, by Saturday, I was already on TV and made my appearance on ‘Sunday Night Heat’ the following day. They filmed it, crafted that entrance, the background score and all. With that, they entrusted me to perform alongside Edge… My aspiration was to always be a part of a vampire ensemble.”
When asked about the avoidance of explicitly calling The Brood vampires, he shares, “To the best of my memory, they never used the terminology ‘vampires’. I don’t believe they ever alluded to us as vampires. Our image evolved into The Brood. Why we were named The Brood or how we became The Brood remains inconclusive, perhaps we hailed from a remote hamlet in Romania or something along those lines.”
Last month, Gangrel and former Brood member, Adam Copeland (Edge), came together once again at the AEW Double or Nothing 2024.
