Former WWE Star Reveals Why He’s Still Without An AEW Contract

Former WWE Superstar, Davey Boy Smith Jr., has expressed interest in working with All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

In past years, Smith Jr. has competed in wrestling promotions like Major League Wrestling (MLW), All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW), and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Notably, he was crowned the AJPW Triple Crown Champion on November 4, 2024.

While Smith Jr. has not yet ventured into AEW, there’s rising speculation regarding his possible participation, especially during the Wembley Stadium events of AEW All In in 2023 and 2024.

On a recent episode of “Hannibal TV,” Smith Jr. contemplated a reunion with his old tag team partner, Lance Archer, within AEW.

Highlights from the podcast are as follows:

Discussion on reteaming with Lance Archer in AEW: “That’s an interesting query. I’ve been asked similar questions before. I have no objections to work with AEW. With MLW, I’ve collaborated with many talents from New Japan. I have nothing negative to say about New Japan either. They provided me with an opportunity to showcase my talents. We had some miscommunications, but ultimately, I felt ready to explore new horizons. A reunion with Lance Archer is indeed a possibility in AEW. My involvement with MLW in the past year limited my participation in AEW, which is understandable. If AEW were to book me for a single match, I’d theoretically win, which would essentially make it a one-off appearance. Therefore, they might not have felt the necessity of my involvement. Similarly, from MLW’s perspective, if I were to participate in a huge AEW event and lose, what would be the return value for MLW? Perhaps some exposure, but it can be a tricky situation.”

Possibility of joining AEW after his AJPW tenure: “To date, no direct proposal has been made for me to join AEW. Fans would naturally expect an extended storyline or consistent appearances in AEW, perhaps teaming up with Lance Archer, instead of just a single match. I am open to such a possibility if it’s a one-off match. However, given my positive personal and professional growth in All Japan, it seems like the best decision to continue there. If AEW hosted an annual tag team tournament, I might consider participating. Perhaps when my contract with All Japan ends, I might transition into AEW. I am certainly not opposed to the idea. A reunion with Lance Archer was successful in the past and could bring a new flavor to AEW. I’m open to the idea, but as of now, I haven’t been approached for such a role.”
