In 2006, WWE revived ECW, positioning it as the organization’s third brand. However, they only reintroduced a single title, namely the ECW World Heavyweight Championship.
Recently, on an episode of “Cafe de Rene” podcast, ex-WWE wrestler Rene Dupree claimed that plans were in place to incorporate ECW World Tag Team Titles. He said:
“Just debuted on ECW the night before, and the plan was – this is a shoot because I heard it from Pat (Patterson), that they were gonna make ECW Tag Titles and give it to us (La Resistance). But, I had started developing (a) substance abuse problem and my lower back was hurting so I decided to take a couple muscle relaxers and I took a couple more and a couple more and a couple more.”
The ECW brand ultimately came to an end in February 2010, paving the path for the original iteration of WWE NXT, which later evolved into a standalone brand by 2012.
This is not the sole case of lost title opportunities either. It was recently unveiled that WWE made a fresh ECW World Title that never actually materialized.
WWE released a video disclosing that the sessile title featured a CM Punk nameplate. This implies that there were plans to replace the traditional design during the period between late 2007 and early 2008.
