On a recent episode of his podcast “83 Weeks”, Eric Bischoff gave his perspective on why he believes MJF should steer clear of appearing on AEW TV as long as possible while the organization is in a rebuilding phase that could threaten to tarnish his brand image.
In the podcast, Bischoff laid out the key observations as follows:
Regarding MJF’s absence from AEW TV while working on movies” He explained, “There are different interpretations to this, and I understand both perspectives. In my experience in WCW, there were instances when talent would approach me with an opportunity to act in a movie, which was a significant step in their career. Much like Tony, I sought out a way to accommodate this. It would be harsh to restrict someone with great potential like MJF, from seizing such opportunities by telling them ‘Sorry, we need you here more. We pay you a significant sum per year, and this is your primary responsibility.’ Even if this is the truth, you don’t present it that way. The last thing you want is to de-motivate the talent.”
Referring to MJF, Bischoff elaborated, “However, the reality is that business is business and the brand is hurting. Accommodating an opportunity is easy but allowing someone to stay out of action for a period due to other commitments can damage your brand. While the financial implications might not matter to Tony, the brand is another matter altogether.”
As for MJF’s need to distance himself from AEW TV due to the organization’s current situation, Bischoff advised, “On the flip side, if I were MJF’s agent or manager, I would suggest him to stay immersed in the movie sets as long as possible. Keep away from an AEW camera until you’re legally bound to appear. Being more connected with AEW’s current situation will affect his market value negatively.”
