The latest chapter of Netflix’s fresh documentary series, “Mr. McMahon,” delves into the storied Monday Night Wars between the then-WWF (now WWE) and the no longer operational WCW.
Vince McMahon was under the impression he was in the crosshairs of Ted Turner’s colossal media corporation, prompting a retaliatory response in the form of the infamous “Billionaire Ted” sketches.
Interestingly, the documentary unveils that it was Eric Bischoff, the past WCW President, who presented the sketches to Turner, and they were met with laughter.
Sticking to his own words, Bischoff admitted, “I kept gnawing at [Vince] and hitting him and doing everything I could to get him to react, and he did. They started doing the Billionaire Ted skits. That was the first real sell. I finally got him to react, which means he was off balance. When I first saw them, it’s like, ‘Let’s tape these things. I gotta’ run them up to Ted.’ We brought them up to Ted and he laughed his ass off. He thought they were funny as hell.”
Kay Koplovitz ultimately stepped in to put a stop to the sketches, calling on WWE to cease producing them. The documentary series gives viewers a glimpse of Turner enjoying the spoof of Hulk Hogan, nicknamed “The Huckster.”
