During the May 1st airing of AEW Dynamite, wrestling star Kenny Omega showed up for the first time since December of 2023 and shared details about his rehabilitation process from diverticulitis. As his promo ended, a surprise assault ensued led by The Elite team which counts The Young Bucks, Jack Perry, and Kazuchika Okada as members, consequently leading to Omega’s temporary withdrawal from AEW shows.
In the aftermath, Omega went under the knife and is currently on the path to recovery, with a focus on improving physical fitness and training in preparation for his high-stakes return to the wrestling ring.
According to insight given on the recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio by Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez, they noted that even though the specifics of Omega’s comeback are still uncertain, it’s believed that Kota Ibushi, who is also recuperating from an injury, will accompany Omega, alias The Cleaner, when he stages his comeback. It’s noteworthy that Omega has returned to gym routines for fitness upkeep.
In Meltzer’s words, “Ibushi is planning his comeback to AEW. In essence, when Kenny Omega returns, Ibushi also returns. He’s currently contracted and everything. He mentioned that he’s waiting for Omega’s return to make his own. I’m not sure about the date of Omega’s return…but it’s not as distant as I previously thought. He’s making progress, that I am sure of.”
Alvarez commented, “He’s evidently making gym routine, which is a positive indication.”
Meltzer also pointed out, “From what I know of the procedure he (Omega) underwent, the average recovery period for a wrestler is around four months, though some may hasten this process. It’s possible for him to return by mid-September, but his case was complicated by numerous health issues. Still, he’s definitely planning his return. I don’t think it’s months and months off. I don’t like to speculate, because he has given no specific timeline, but I get the feeling it’ll be before the year ends.”
Omega’s surgical procedure was carried out on May 16, thus a four-month recovery period might not see the ex-AEW World Champion ready in time for the AEW All In: London 2024 event.
