Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson hopes that an upcoming movie will be the start of more dramatic roles for the Hollywood A-Lister.
Last month, it was announced that Johnson would play Mark Kerr in ‘The Smashing Machine‘ which will be directed by Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer, Heaven Knows What).
In a recent interview with Variety, Johnson spoke about working with Safdie. While he’s not ditching Hollywood blockbusters yet, the Brahma Bull is looking for serious roles. He said,
“I want to be clear not to say that this is an abandonment of big, four-quadrant movies. I love making them, and there is tremendous value and importance in [them] … but there’s a time and a place for them. I’m at this point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more box office. I mean I want more humanity. And that is why Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative, hungry partner for me.”
Kerr was an MMA fighter who reached success while also battling an addiction to painkillers. There is no confirmed release date for the film.
