WWE Champion Drew McIntyre recently spoke with Riju Dasgupta of SK Wrestling, and he reflected on his run with the title.
As one of WWE’s top stars, some fans want to see McIntyre compete in cinematic matches. But he made it clear that as long as he has the title, he’d rather compete in traditional wrestling matches.
“I’m WWE Champion and I think, in fact I know, that the way I’ve been building the title, it’s about the honor and respect and about wrestling,” said McIntyre. “And there’s room on the show for everything, a little bit of something for everybody…. It’d be boring if everybody was the same.
“And The Fiend’s unique character is so incredible, so out there, but that’s not something I think I want to mix the WWE title with. That’s for that portion of the audience, and for me as a fan, to watch and be blown away by the spectacle. But it comes to the WWE Championship, I expect it to be in a wrestling match. You know, man on man, fighting over the title for respect and honor and that’s what I’m all about, that’s how I’ve tried represent the title, and that’s how I think it should be represented. Not in a comedic match, not in outlandish fashion, but a realistic wrestling environment.”
McIntyre also named Sheamus and Jinder Mahal as two Superstars he’d like to face because he thinks his friendships with both men could create incredible stories.
“[Sheamus] has already been on top of the mountain multiple times and won everything there is to win,” said McIntyre. “But over the past few years, he’s [been] more of a tag wrestler and floating and not really doing anything at the top of the card. But someone like Sheamus, I think, is an interesting one because as long as he’s been around, it’s been a while since he’s been at the top of the mountain.
“Just the same as Jinder, we have that real relationship….The story, it would be incredible, and I think where I’m at right now would help pull him to where he belongs on the card.”
Fans will have to wait and see if McIntyre gets to clash with Sheamus and Mahal at some point.
