At WWE The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, Drew McIntyre defended the WWE Championship against Dolph Ziggler. Before the match, Ziggler revealed the stipulation he chose; the two men would face off in a match with Extreme Rules only. Plus, if McIntyre got disqualified or counted out, Ziggler would win the title. Ziggler rolled out of the ring and tried to get a weapon, but McIntyre tossed him around ringside. McIntyre dominated the match early on and stopped Ziggler from hitting him with a chair. The champion threw Ziggler across the ring with a suplex. A clothesline sent Ziggler crashing to the floor. Ziggler gained the upper hand by sending McIntyre head-first into the ring post. The champion suplexed Ziggler onto the floor. Ziggler kicked McIntyre below the belt and hit him with a steel chair several times. McIntyre suplexed Ziggler into the announce desk to gain some breathing room.

Ziggler hit a Fameasser off the announce desk and onto the floor. The challenger locked in a Sleeper, but McIntyre fought out of it. Ziggler sent McIntyre shoulder-first into the ring post, but McIntyre clotheslined Ziggler to gain some momentum. McIntyre launched Ziggler face-first into the plexiglass. Ziggler countered a Claymore with a steel chair shot to the knee and hit a Zig Zag for a two count. Ziggler hit an elbow drop through a table outside the ring. McIntyre barely made it back into the ring to avoid losing his title.

A Glasgow Kiss floored Ziggler, and another Fameasser and a Zig Zag weren’t enough to keep McIntyre down. Ziggler slammed McIntyre onto a chair. McIntyre hit a Claymore out of nowhere to win the match and retain the title.
