Sammy Guevara, a former TNT Champ, made a notable reappearance on AEW broadcasts during the recent ROH television tapings held in Arlington, Texas on a Sunday night. He took the opportunity to confront The Dark Order and come to the aid of Dustin Rhodes.
There had been speculation surrounding Guevara’s absence from AEW, with some attributing it to the presence of Mercedes Mone, but Bryan Alvarez put an end to such rumors while speaking on Wrestling Observer Live show.
Alvarez passionately clarified, “I am aware that many have hastily drawn the conclusion that Guevara had been shifted to Ring of Honor due to Mercedes Mone’s presence on the main AEW TV show. I have been informed that his Ring of Honor participation doesn’t have anything to do with Mercedes. I shared this information and some responses were skeptical, saying ‘It’s impossible, it must be the case.’ The fact is, Sammy has been ready to return for a while, and there was a prepared storyline which was intended to mark his return to the main lineup. However, there was a part of the narrative with which he wasn’t comfortable – a proposed heel turn, I believe. They had a storyline waiting for him, but upon his refusal to accept the heel turn aspect, they chose an alternative narrative where he is a babyface in Ring of Honor. Actually, there were schemes to reintegrate him into the main lineup even when Mercedes Mone was included, but that did not transpire. I am fairly confident that he will make his comeback to the primary roster. It is highly likely that we will see him back on Dynamite, Collision etc., by the end of the year”
In a less positive turn of events, Guevara’s earlier racially inflammatory joke about black individuals seems to have once again surfaced on social media platforms. Interestingly, it should be remembered that Guevara apologized to Mone a few years back after a 2016 inappropriate comment he had made became viral.
