Contrary to circulating reports suggesting WWE permitting released performers to maintain their ring names post their exit, an insider has revealed the reality to be otherwise.
This rumor principally originated from a discussion about Ethan Page’s name being registered under trademark, propelling the idea that WWE was granting the green light to talent to keep their ring names post-departure. However, sources indicate that while some performers indeed continue to use their ring names after leaving, it is not due to WWE’s permission but rather because WWE simply lacks the authority to curb them. This is primarily because these wrestlers already held rights to these names before signing with WWE. Names such as Chris Jericho, Adam Cole, Toni Storm, Mustafa Ali, Sting, CM Punk and more fall under this category.
Predictably, WWE does not hold the power to stop performers from utilizing their personal names post their tenure with the company. It’s noteworthy to remember that wrestlers like Ryback and The Ultimate Warrior have successfully exploited this rule by legally replacing their real names with their ring names.
On the other hand, wrestlers like Seth Rollins would not have the liberty to use their ring names if they choose to part ways with WWE. Wrestlers are now preferring their original names, as shown by Dolph Ziggler who has resorted to his birth name, Nic Nemeth. Similarly, Raj Dhesi and AJ Francis are no longer using their ring names of Jinder Mahal and Top Dolla, respectively.
