It was 20 years ago back in the year 2000 that David Arquette captured the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in what many call the worst decision in professional wrestling history.
The whole thing began seemingly as a joke when Tony Schiavone mentioned to Vince Russo that it would be a good idea for Arquette to win the title. Russo thought it was a pretty good idea at the time, but was not completely sold. They ended up following through with the idea anyway.
The Monday Night Wars were still going strong at the time and Nitro lost an estimated 600K viewers the week after this event. WCW folded 11 months later.
David Arquette ended up holding the championship for 12 days and donated his entire earnings from the title run to the families of Darren Drozdoz, Owen Hart, and Brian Pillman.
WWE’s FOX account tweeted out about the anniversary and Lance Storm chimed in with his own comments. You can see the tweets below. Do you remember seeing Arquette win the title 20 years ago? What was your reaction when you first found out? Let us know in the comments below.
Should probably add he pinned Eric in a tag team match to win the World title from his own tag partner, celebrates with him despite just losing the world title. To be the man, you’ve got to beat the…. oh never mind 🤦♂️ https://t.co/YzLdPHbvvc
