In the early stages of 2022, Cody Rhodes chose to leave AEW, making a memorable comeback at WWE’s WrestleMania 38.
Following his return, Rhodes received tremendous recognition. He claimed the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and participated in distinguished feuds with The Bloodline, Seth Rollins, and AJ Styles.
Rhodes shared his thoughts about his AEW departure on a recent episode of the “Insight” podcast.
Rhodes, also known as The American Nightmare, felt there were more prosperous potentials beyond AEW in the larger pro wrestling world. He stated,
“I knew this was a time of transition. I was aware that this chapter was not going to be eternal, that a bigger destiny awaited me. It may sound as a negative take to some, but in actuality it isn’t. [The WWE Title] is the ultimate reward in the wrestling field. It’s the ultimate goal as soon as you put on the boots. My aim was to attain it and to express my deep respect for my time at AEW, where I was able to hone my skills. It was similar to Hulkamania’s phase in the AWA before moving to WWE. The resurgence was in the air, it was beyond just the company. But everything was there at AEW and I harbor nothing but affection for it. When I transitioned to WWE and WrestleMania, I felt I returned as a well-rounded competitor. I took control of the character ‘The American Nightmare’ and the way the narrative is presented. I have a better understanding of these elements than any writer or producer, and I’m grateful for their contribution. Overall, it’s all love and respect.”
Rhodes is scheduled to defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship title against Solo Sikoa at the WWE SummerSlam 2024 event.
