During a recent interview on the “Sports Illustrated Media Podcast,” professional wrestler CM Punk expressed his doubt that his spouse, April Mendez – better recognized by her ring name AJ Lee or AJ Mendez, will make a comeback to WWE. However, he also shared his enthusiasm at the potential of her return.
Mendez’s journey in WWE started in 2009 with Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), subsequently moving to NXT, and eventually making her way to the main roster in 2011. During her time in WWE, Mendez had an impressively successful career, clinching the Divas Championship title thrice and establishing a record-breaking title reign that lasted 406 days.
In the context of Mendez possibly returning to WWE, Punk mentioned, “You cannot possibly push my wife in any direction she does not want to be in. It’s quite common to be asked about this during every interview, but I don’t mind as it’s logical given I’m a fan of AJ Lee, just like your niece or other ardent supporters. She has been a source of inspiration for the new wave of female wrestlers, and her influence can be observed particularly in NXT, and even some independent wrestlers. As a fan, her return would make me extremely happy, but ultimately, it’s her choice. I absolutely have no control over that decisions.”
Mendez parted ways with WWE in 2015 due to health-related reasons and since then has engaged in different activities. Over the past few years, she has authored a 2017 biography and showed her artistic side, working on comic books. She was also part of the effort to revive the Women Of Wrestling (WOW) promotion.
