Chris Jericho’s addition to the title match involving Christian, played a key role in the latter’s eventual departure from WWE in 2005.
In a recent episode of the “Insight” podcast, Christian Cage shed light on the thought process that eventually led to his WWE exit after a long stint with the organization.
He emotionally stated, “It was the stuff that I did with Cena…the triple threat match was staged with me, Cena, and Jericho. The inclusion of Chris seemed to be because they didn’t perceive me to be a high-profile star able to carry that kind of responsibility, so they brought Chris in. That rankled me. Won’t you give me the opportunity to prove that I can pull this off?”
The triple threat match being discussed turned out to be a platform where then-WWE Champion John Cena had to defend his title against Christian and Chris Jericho at that year’s Vengeance pay-per-view event.
Christian initially enjoyed the position of being Cena’s only opponent at the pay-per-view. However, the situation flipped when Jericho managed to persuade Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff to include him in the match.
Following the match, Christian was transferred to SmackDown, only to leave the company shortly. His association with WWE came to a halt and swiftly transitioned into TNA Wrestling, just days post his WWE cessation.
