Renowned wrestling personality, Chris Jericho, is open and proud about his profession, frequently voicing his thoughts, which are, at times, seen as contentious.
A veteran in the field, Jericho strongly advocates for professional wrestling to be included in the Olympics.
Despite facing a constant struggle to gain mainstream recognition over the years, owing to misconceptions about its prearranged nature and characterization as scripted performance art, professional wrestling perseveres.
On a recent episode of the “Blocks” podcast, Jericho voiced the idea of professional wrestling being part of the Olympics in a manner similar to events like figure skating and synchronized swimming, which are scored based on points.
The erstwhile AEW World Champion stressed that the athletic skills demonstrated by professional wrestlers could be an influential factor in making pro wrestling a serious contender for inclusion in the Olympics.
Jericho stated, “I’ve started to really think about how pro wrestling could easily be an Olympic sport, because it’s an athletic display between two people, much like figure skating or synchronized swimming or anything else that’s judged on points. Think about that. So let’s say I’m from Canada. Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, best wrestlers from Canada. We put together our routine, and then you got you know, Will Ospreay and Michael Oku from England. They put together their routine.”
He further elaborated, “Then you got you know Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, from the United States putting together their routine. Then the judges would say, ‘Okay, this was the best,’ It doesn’t matter who wins or loses. Like figure skating.”
