On a recent edition of the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer discussed Sting’s overall AEW run as well as his upcoming retirement match at AEW Revolution 2024.
Sting will team with Darby Allin to defend the AEW World Tag Team Championships against The Young Bucks in a Tornado Tag Team match this Sunday at AEW Revolution 2024 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On Sting’s run in AEW: “I think Sting was utilized properly in TNA; I think Sting was properly utilized in AEW. I think Tony’s done a great job with Sting, featuring him as ‘The Icon,’ the legend, putting him in matches where he could be protected yet featured.”
On speaking to Sting and thanking him; “I spoke to Sting last night. Because I just wanted to tell him thank you. Thank you for allowing me to work with you. Thank you for being kind to me. The last thing I said to Sting was ‘I love you, brother.’ And he said ‘I love you,’ back.”
On Sting’s last match: “And now his dad will be looking down from Heaven, and Sting being a devout Christian, knows his dad is going to be watching on from Heaven — I hope he can give his dad that last match that he would have liked to see.”
On Sting’s match possibly going on last: “If Sting goes on last, I think that’s kind of tipping your hat to ‘We’re going off the air very happy…’ I’m all about heat, but…every once in a while, you’ve got to make the people happy. This is, to me, a tough call. Sting is the biggest star on this given night. It’s his last match. Does ‘The Icon’ Sting’s last match trump the importance of your World Heavyweight Championship match?”
Dreamer on Sting ending his career on a win: “If he retires as the tag team champion, that’s pretty cool…AEW did really, really good with that tournament, with the Continental Classic. And if you wanted to get your tag division where you elevate it, everybody for the tag titles is a cool thing to do…Sting loses his last night, and then you have a nice rah rah? I don’t know. If that team is losing, you’re switching the belts, then I say no, you put the World Title on last.”
On Tony Khan liking feel good moments: “Tony is notorious for feel good moments. When I say notorious, I’m not using that in a bad sense. I’m using that…Tony does feel good very well. Tony likes to make his AEW fanbase happy. So if I’m going on AEW’s history and the way they book stuff, I would say that that’s going to be a very happy, jovial sincere, emotional, moment. And not only are you going to want everybody live in the arena to feel that emotional moment, you’re going to want that to go right through your TV set, right to your people at home.”
Sting’s AEW Run and Retirement Match: What to Expect at AEW Revolution 2024
Sting, one of the most iconic figures in professional wrestling history, has been making waves in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) since his debut in December 2020. As his retirement match approaches at AEW Revolution 2024, fans and experts are buzzing with anticipation. In a recent episode of the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer discussed Sting’s overall run in AEW and what his retirement match means for both him and the promotion.
Throughout his career, Sting has been known as “The Icon” and a legend in the wrestling industry. AEW has done an excellent job of utilizing him in a way that protects his legacy while still featuring him prominently. Tony Khan, the president of AEW, has been instrumental in ensuring that Sting’s character is respected and showcased appropriately.
Bully Ray, a former professional wrestler himself, had the opportunity to work with Sting and took the chance to express his gratitude. He spoke to Sting recently and thanked him for allowing him to collaborate and for being kind. The mutual respect between the two was evident as they exchanged heartfelt words, with Sting reciprocating the love.
Sting’s upcoming retirement match holds significant emotional weight for him. As a devout Christian, he believes that his late father will be watching from Heaven. Sting hopes to deliver a match that would make his father proud. This personal connection adds an extra layer of meaning to the already highly anticipated event.
One question that arises is whether Sting’s match should go on last. Traditionally, the main event of a wrestling show is reserved for the World Heavyweight Championship match. However, given the magnitude of Sting’s retirement and his status as the biggest star on that particular night, some argue that it would be fitting for his match to close the show. It would be a way to send off “The Icon” on a high note and provide fans with a feel-good moment.
Tommy Dreamer, another wrestling veteran, suggests that if Sting retires as the tag team champion alongside Darby Allin, it would be a cool and unique way to elevate the tag division. AEW has been successful with their Continental Classic tournament, and having the retiring legend end his career as a champion could be a memorable moment. However, if Sting’s team were to lose and the belts were to change hands, Dreamer believes that the World Title match should take precedence as the main event.
Tony Khan, known for his penchant for feel-good moments, is likely to prioritize creating an emotional and sincere atmosphere for Sting’s retirement match. AEW has a history of booking matches that leave fans feeling happy and satisfied. Khan understands the importance of making the live audience in the arena and viewers at home feel connected to the moment. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sting’s retirement match delivers an emotional rollercoaster ride for everyone involved.
As AEW Revolution 2024 approaches, fans eagerly await Sting’s retirement match and the potential impact it will have on the promotion. Whether his match goes on last or not, one thing is certain – Sting’s legacy will forever be etched in the annals of professional wrestling history.
