Bully Ray: AEW Succeeds Because Its Wrestlers ‘Command More Emotion’

Bully Ray and the boys at Busted Open Radio were discussing the difference between the two competitors in the Wednesday Night War when Ray came across an insightful observation. Looking at AEW, Bully sees a clear loved hero in Cody Rhodes and a clear dastardly villain in MJF. Both characters are vital to how the territory operates, a vibe that stands in stark contrast to NXT’s ongoing narrative.
NXT might have better wrestlers and might have better wrestling matches, but AEW characters are commanding more emotion. If you look at any successful wrestler throughout history, it’s the ones who have commanded your emotions that have always gotten over more.
To prove their point, Bully Ray and producer Alex go over the biggest heels in NXT. Everyone from Adam Cole to Shayna Bayzler to Finn Balor, they’re all loved by the crowd rather than hated despite their alignment. “Without hate, there can be no love. You need the opposite end of the spectrum. You can only be more loved if you have someone to hate against.”
