Wrestler Bryan Danielson has expressed his desire to see Zack Sabre Jr. win the NJPW G1 Climax 34 tournament. He recently shared this perspective in an interview with Sports Illustrated. Sabre is currently a leading contestant in this year’s G1 Climax tournament.
Danielson made his preference clear. He said, “As someone who follows New Japan’s engagements closely, I’d be thrilled to see Zack Sabre clinch the top prize in G1 and then become the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. If you ask me about the matches and personalities I find the most interesting in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Zack Sabre Jr. sits at the top.”
Furthermore, he expressed his admiration for Sabre, saying, “I’m not in tune with business indices and such, yet I find his interviews to be the most engaging. I derive much satisfaction from watching him.”
In related news, Konosuke Takeshita, another competitor in the G1 Climax 34 tournament, recently gave an interview to Tokyo Sports. He discussed his tournament run, his rapport with Shinsuke Nakamura, among other things.
Speaking of his respect for Nakamura, Takeshita said, “Isn’t he the epitome of an accomplished Japanese player? Both in terms of achievements and influence. I come closest to him as a fellow Japanese wrestler, having met and conversed with him on multiple occasions. He once told me, ‘The future is in your hands, Take-chan. It’s a weighty responsibility, but it also fosters my self-assurance.”
Discussing his tournament course, he stated, “People often tell me, ‘Do it for you’ and ‘Don’t be too nice.’ These themes guide me every time I step in the ring. Therefore, I never approach any match in the G1 tournament with an indifferent or tepid attitude. I am being watched by my mentors. I believe my mentor wouldn’t be happy seeing me win simply for winning’s sake, but would affirm, ‘You earned that victory.’ To ever reach my mentor’s level, I must navigate through the G1 successfully. I will proceed without any qualms.”
