During a current edition of his “Something To Wrestle” podcast, Bruce Prichard discussed Vince McMahon’s viewpoint of Lex Luger in late 1988, Big John Studd’s retirement in the exact same year, and more.
You can take a look at some highlights from the podcast listed below:
On Vince McMahon’s viewpoint on Lex Luger in late 1988: “I do not believe that there was anything ‘oh my god I’ve got to have Lex Luger’ Luger certainly had the appearance, absolutely had the charm, however I do not believe there was anything there as no overtures made at that time and no one was stating ‘anyone understand Lex? We got to get Lex. We require to speak to Lex let him understand we’re interested. There was none of that. Not to my understanding at that time.”
On Big John Studd retiring in ’88: “I believe he recognized when you retire you do not earn money. You understand it wasn’t like he was 65 and was going to gather Social Security. I believed you asked why he returned. I believe he was simply done. I believe he was simply stressed out and wishing to leave the roadway. It was a various organization and you worked daily. Those day of rests were rare, however you wished to work daily. The more you worked the more you made. The more you made the more you worked.”
On the prepare for Andre in ’89: “Oh the strategy was to return to Studd and Andre. Yeah, and we did, and John left once again. He might not take it. Andre simply beat the s *** out of him every night. He didn’t like John. Simply his simple existence. I believe that’s quite precise.”
On structuring the Royal Rumble match: “Well, at this moment in time it was generally Pat and Vince that would sort of ordinary whatever out and after that I would survived it with a tv eye and sort of take a look at things. When I came back in 90s the Rumble was something that Pat was extremely enthusiastic about and I enjoyed working on the Rumble with Pat, just later on. The match itself we would sit there and we would compose and simply attempt to come up with the stories that you have how they’re represented and then develop brand-new stories out of things that might take place in the Royal Rumble match itself. When you have all of that laid out then you simply kind of put it together. You understand it’s like timing to me. Timing is not something and setting out a Royal Rumble is not something that you can simply ‘ah, go compose me a Royal Rumble.’ It’s not that simple to do it properly. It’s a feel versus this is how you do it.”
