During a recent episode of his podcast “Something To Wrestle”, WWE executive Bruce Prichard elaborated on why Mankind was the chosen debut opponent for Kane in 1997.
Below are some key points from the podcast:
Discussing Mick Foley’s prowess to adjust to any character or style, Prichard said, “It’s interesting. The versatility of Mick Foley’s characters is commendable. Whether it’s Mick or Mankind, or Cactus Jack, or even Dude Love, they can all seamlessly blend with any wrestler or character. That’s the true genius of Mick Foley. He would perfectly adapt each character, who lived in the potentially terrifying world of his mind, and make it work for any opponent he faced. The stories he was able to spin were so unique to each character’s mindset that it was always successful. He was truly skilful. I believe that the man behind the characters, Mick Foley, is one of the most intellectual people I’ve had the pleasure to know. He’s a remarkably intelligent guy.”
Furthermore, on why Mankind was a suitable debut competitor for Kane, Prichard said, “There’s no distinction between Mankind being the first foe for The Undertaker and being the same for Kane. The monstrous character that Mick portrays so effortlessly aligns perfectly with Kane’s image. Their pairing was a flawless blend of styles and it was a logical move. Mick, having been the first to confront The Undertaker, was the logical first target for his brother, Kane. Kane’s objective was to get to his brother, and he would take any means necessary, even if it meant obliterating Mick Foley, Dude Love, or Mankind, or any of the numerous darker characters that dwell in his psyche… God knows there are many of them, but we’re not going to delve into the ones that haven’t yet been revealed.”
