Billy Corgan can’t speak for other promoters, but he says Ric Flair earned the right to say whatever he wants in his ring.

Billy Corgan was a guest on Busted Open Radio and was asked if he knew or thought Ric Flair was going to talk so much about WWE in his promo at NWA 73. Corgan said no, he didn’t, but that wasn’t an issue because Ric Flair has earned the right to say whatever he wants when he’s standing in the middle of an NWA ring.

“No, but you know what? Ric said, ‘What do you want me to say?’ And I said, ‘Ric, you’re Ric Flair, you could say whatever you want.’ He went ‘really?’ and I said ‘Yeah. You could talk about whatever you want. I trust you.’ He said ‘I want to speak from my heart. I’ve been thinking about what I want to say and it teared me up just thinking about what I want to say.’ So I said just do your thing, that’s it.

“That’s what we’re about. Ric Flair has earned the right to step through those ropes and say whatever the hell he wants. I asked Ric, ‘Did you wrestle here?’ and he said many, many times. I [asked] who he wrestled, [he replied] ‘Oh, Harley [Race], Dusty [Rhodes], Blackjack [Mulligan]…’ He rattled off twenty names and you’re like, ‘My God!’ Of course he can step into the ring and say what he wants! You don’t think he’s earned that? I do, and I don’t care about what anyone else thinks for their company, for my company, Ric Flair can say whatever the damn hell he wants.”

Flair made his advertised appearance at NWA 73 and cut a lengthy promo where he looked back on his legendary career and thanked everyone who has supported him along the way. Flair mentioned Vince McMahon by name, as well as Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton and others for their support over the years.

Prior to NWA 73, Corgan told Metro UK that Flair’s future with the NWA was up in the air after the event, but hoped to have him back in the future and said it’s “one of those situations where you just see where it goes.” Check out more from Corgan’s interview at this link.
