Following the cancellation of Netflix’s GLOW, the actress who portrayed Liberty Belle, Betty Gilpin, penned a touching goodbye via Vanity Fair.
“GLOW was canceled. I am sad. (If you are one of the many drowning in real-life horrors at this time and the musings of a sulking marionette would be the thing that tilts your van wheel into a pond, please stop reading here, and I wish you all the strength you need to get through this fecal hurricane of a time.)
“GLOW was canceled. I am sad. It was the best job I’ll ever have. Our business is a strange mix of attempting childhood dreams to a room full of asleep people and shirking dignity for awake tomato-throwers for rent. This was one of those extremely rare times where we got to do the dream for awake people. And it didn’t disappear in an audition room or unsent email. We did it on a show, recorded it all, I swear. Thirty episodes.”
She’d continue, “If you, like me, are feeling insane at waking up every morning to check your phone to see if the emperor having no clothes counts as being immune-compromised, and you need a break, I have a recommendation. It’s not ‘world-changing’—we need to do that most right now and focus our efforts there. But. If in between fighting you need an escape, I suggest watching GLOW.”
A Netflix spokesperson spoke to Deadline, talking about how difficult a decision it was to not do a final season.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do the fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging. We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan, and all the writers, cast, and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world.”
