The Professional Fighter and Hollywood actress, Ronda Rousey, recently announced her latest venture in creative arts. She’s stepping into the realm of graphic novels in collaboration with the comic publisher, Artists Writers and Artisans (AWA). Rousey is touting a Kickstarter campaign for her debut in this arena; the launch of a graphic novel titled EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED.
This isn’t merely a side hobby for Rousey; it’s been a project five years in the making, as she revealed on Twitter. The novel, showcasing a blend of martial art, romantic comedy aspects, was co-written by Rousey herself and is illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Mike Deodato under the editorial guidance of Marvel veteran, Axel Alonso.
Rousey’s graphic novel, as one might guess, takes elements from her career both as a fighter and an actress. Yet, it also pulls from her experience as a mother. Serving as a confluence of these aspects, ‘EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED’ promises an exciting blend of action, adventure, comedy, and romance.
The plot of the novel revolves around the codename, “Mom”. It features a hitwoman, whose lethal arsenal is disguised inside a fake baby bump, on the verge of her major break into the criminal world. When she gets pregnant by a top-ranked assassin, the story transitions into a cornucopia of action, adventure, and romance wrapped around with comedic elements.
The Kickstarter campaign for the graphic novel is set to launch on July 25. Supporters will find tiered rewards, with exclusives for the biggest Ronda Rousey fans.
In respect to this new venture, Chief Creative Officer of AWA and former-superstar at Marvel, Axel Alonso praised Rousey’s effort, stating that Rousey has employed same level of ferocity, discipline, and creativity in her script that led her to be a champion in Judo, UFC, and WWE.
