AEW Trios Champion Anthony Bowens wishes that the late Chris Kanyon was alive to see the progress the LGBTQ+ community has made in professional wrestling.

Before taking his own life in 2010, Kanyon spoke about being a gay man and claimed WWE released him from his contract due to his sexuality.

Speaking to “Out Magazine,” Bowens spoke about the homophobia during Kanyon’s wrestling career, and what he would tell the late wrestler if he was alive today. He said,

“I don’t know what I would say to him, but I would hope that he would be proud of all the progress that was made, because I did read some of his book about how much he struggled and heard the stories of his experiences going toward the latter end of his life where he did take his life, which was so heartbreaking to hear.

“I just wish he was around to see it so he wouldn’t have to go through that pain. He could exist in the space of professional wrestling doing what he loves that I do every single week.”

In the interview, Bowens also disclosed his desire to become AEW’s first gay World Champion. You can check out his comments here.
