On a recent episode of “AEW Represents,” Anthony Bowens, an openly gay wrestler of AEW, expressed the progress he has made in his wrestling career and how AEW has provided him with a platform to freely express his true self. He shared his accomplishments including being featured in the Out 100, being the first gay champion of AEW, and winning the tag team titles in New York City. By making these achievements public, he hopes that he can inspire and give hope to others to pursue their dreams.
Bowens elaborated, “This is unbelievable. I never imagined that this would be possible. Aside from personal goals, it’s also about the impact it can have on others—someone might see my magazine cover, or see my name on the list, or watch me on TV and feel validated, feel safe, and even feel inspired. Acceptance and respect for each person’s individuality, regardless of sexuality or nationality, is essential. We are all human. At AEW, everyone is allowed to be their true selves. I am proud to represent this brand and I believe it’s important for people to see me do it too. It’s for all the kids who want to be wrestlers, entertainers or athletes in the future—they need to see that representation and visibility. If Anthony Bowens can be a champion, then they can too.”
