Ray criticized the matchup, calling it “too clean.”

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Bryan Danielson at AEW WrestleDream: “Last night, I watched Danielson and Sabre and I’m like, ‘I’m just not into this one.’ And then I realized why. There was no struggle. Thatcher and Riddle [in NXT] showed me struggle in their style. Zack Sabre did not have that … it almost looked too clean, too perfect, too good. And I think the lack of the struggle is what made it not as entertaining for me.”

On how the match didn’t feel like a fight: “I know that match was entertaining to everybody else and they loved it, and five stars and screamed to the top of my lungs. But it just wasn’t my taste because there was no in-between, there was no struggle to fight. Zack Sabre barely had a glisten of sweat on him when that match was over. I just didn’t feel like it was a fight, a wrestling match that had something more to it than what I got.”

In a recent episode of the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray shared his analysis of the Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. match at AEW WrestleDream 2023. Danielson emerged victorious in the non-title match, securing the win via pinfall. However, Ray expressed his criticism of the matchup, describing it as “too clean.”

Ray explained his perspective by stating that the match lacked struggle, which he believes is an essential element in wrestling. He compared it to a match between Timothy Thatcher and Matt Riddle in NXT, where he witnessed a genuine struggle between the two competitors. According to Ray, Sabre’s performance appeared too flawless and perfect, which made it less entertaining for him.

The lack of a fight-like atmosphere was another aspect that Ray highlighted. He mentioned that while others may have found the match entertaining and deserving of five stars, it didn’t align with his personal taste. Ray emphasized that he didn’t feel the match had the depth and intensity he expected from a wrestling bout. He pointed out that Sabre barely broke a sweat during the match, which further contributed to his perception that it lacked the essence of a true fight.
