Recently, WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long shared some insight into the current backstage climate in WWE under the guidance of Triple H on the “WrestleBinge” podcast.
Here are some key takeaways from his discussion:
His perspective on current morale in WWE: “Certainly, the mood backstage was positive. Everyone seemed happy, eager to work, and was enjoying the atmosphere. I’ve noticed several changes over time, and it seems they were for the better.”
On Paul Heyman’s disposition: “I was fortunate enough to have a talk with Paul Heyman. He seems in good spirits, and from what I’ve gathered, everyone currently appears to be happy in WWE.”
During another recent podcast appearance, “Insight,” Teddy Long spoke about the genesis of his signature catchphrases, his famous dance, his “Buckle Up Teddy” phrase, and much more.
Here are few highlights from that conversation:
How he came to routinely put stars one-on-one with The Undertaker: “I put a lot of emphasis on it after a night at Madison Square Garden. Stephanie McMahon introduced someone and later, Vince McMahon mentioned the need for emphasis on introductions. From then on, I made sure to distinctly announce, ‘One on one with The Undertaker!’ After it picked up popularity, it became a routine part of what I said.”
The story behind the term Playa: “Interestingly enough, Playa came about from me talking to my dog, Boss. As he grew, I started often telling him ‘Come on, Playa’ whenever he was in the way. Eventually, I ended up using the term while on TV.”
On the infamous “Buckle Up Teddy: “The Undertaker came up with that line. I remember the day we went over it. It was a great learning experience, and Vince praised my input in the process. The line wasn’t scripted; Undertaker just said it.”
