Alex Shelley will never forget the day he became Impact World Champion, close to two decades after his debut for the promotion.
Shelley captured the title at Against All Odds, defeating Steve Maclin and ending the former WWE Superstar’s reign at 54 days.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Shelley said the day of the show began with a workout and calculated breakfast, but things got serious when he walked into the arena. He said,
“When I walked in, everything slowed down and became fluid. That reminded me it was my moment. It was my match and no one was going to take that away from me. I wasn’t going to believe anything until it happened, so it was surreal for me even as it was happening.”
Shelley went on to recall the warm reception he received backstage after his title win and the litany of congratulatory texts from loved ones. He said,
“It was mind-blowing, it meant the world to me and I responded to every single one of those texts.”
Shelley will defend the Impact World Championship against Nick Aldis at Impact Slammiversary 2023 next month.
