The wrestling world mourned this weekend after news broke of Brodie Lee’s unfortunate passing due to a non-COVID-related lung issue. While it came as a shock to many fans first seeing the news on social media, many within AEW knew that things had taken a turn. As reported by Fightful, many staff in the company knew that Lee was suffering from a severe illness as early as November. Staff members were informed to keep Lee’s condition confidential out of respect for his family. One wrestler stated that this was also to dispel the idea that anything scandalous had occurred.
Brodie was last seen on AEW Dynamite on October 7, the night he lost the TNT Championship back to Cody in a brutal dog collar match. Mr. Brodie Lee would feature on the following week’s Being The Elite, but that was the last time the leader of the Dark Order would appear on an AEW-affiliated video. This week’s Being The Elite is a full tribute to Brodie on the show, including clips from his full tenure as leader of the Dark Order.
At last week’s recording of Dynamite, there was a dark segment featuring Brodie Lee Jr. “winning” the AEW Title from Kenny Omega with a rear-naked choke. While it didn’t make headlines at the time, this was likely so that Brodie could witness his son’s first official match before his untimely passing. A fitting final gift to a man who garnered respect wherever he went in the business.
