The purpose of the AEW International Championship Eliminator Tournament was to decide who would tackle Kenny Omega for the title at AEW Dynasty 2025. However, a recent controversial ending to a four-way match on AEW Dynamite has added a layer of complexity.
It all started when the four-way match, featuring Orange Cassidy, Ricochet, Mark Davis, and “Speedball” Mike Bailey, drew to a close. Bailey had attempted a pin on Davis when Ricochet intervened to be part of the pinfall, stacking himself on top of both wrestlers.
The incident became even more controversial when the referee failed to notice Ricochet’s feet on the ropes, a move that should have disqualified him. However, going with the fluid rules of professional wrestling, where referees occasionally review footage, restart matches, or adhere to their original decision for narrative purposes, both Bailey and Ricochet were declared the number one contenders.
An observant Twitter user pointed out the gaffe, “On the replay, Taz said the ref positioned himself so he could see just the shoulders and he couldn’t see Ricochet’s feet. The ref wasn’t even looking at the shoulders. Just straight down ”
Adding to the unexpected turn of events, the graphics department had a three-way image prepared in case of an outcome that wouldn’t usually occur. As a result, they announced Omega would go up against both Bailey and Ricochet at Dynasty.
What are your thoughts on this unexpected Triple Threat situation? Does this enhance the upcoming match, or should it have just been Bailey or Ricochet? Could there have been another match between Bailey and Ricochet to determine the true winner? Feel free to share your views below!
