PPV EVENT INFORMATION

Date: Sunday, May 28, 2023

Start Time: 7 p.m. ET (pre-show), 8 p.m. ET (main show)

Location: T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada

MATCH CARD, PREDICTIONS & HEAT INDEX ANTICIPATION LEVELS

(as currently advertised; card is always subject to change)

Temperature Scale = Scorching > Hot > Lukewarm > Temperate > Chilly > Cold > Freezing

Heat Index is my assessment of how interesting the segment is, including how excited I am for the match and how intriguing the feud has been. The hotter, the better. Scorching translates to not being able to wait to see it, while Freezing means I couldn’t possibly care less and think it will be awful.

AEW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOUR PILLARS FOUR-WAY MATCH:
MJF (c) vs. Darby Allin vs. Jungle Boy Jack Perry vs. Sammy Guevara

Heat Index = Scorching
Prediction: MJF wins.

Thoughts: While this feud has had its ups and downs, and certainly wasn’t booked the way I would have done it, I’m glad we’re getting this main event. This was bound to happen at some point, and for it to headline this event, that is awesome. Nobody stands a chance to dethrone MJF, though. He’s far above the others as far as his presence and most other skills, too. Plus, he’s got to have that belt going into 2024. He’s not dropping it any time soon—least of all to three guys who aren’t ready for that spot quite yet. They will be down the line. I’m confident of that. But now isn’t their time. This should be a lot of fun, though. I’m really looking forward to seeing how they try to steal the show.

AEW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) (c) vs. Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal

Heat Index = Lukewarm
Prediction: FTR wins.

Thoughts: The setup with Mark Briscoe as the special guest referee brings something extra to the table. I like that. However, I don’t buy for one second that his inclusion will lead to the titles changing hands. While I’d be down for Jarrett and Lethal as champions, FTR just won these belts. Switching them again so fast would be odd.

AEW TNT CHAMPIONSHIP LADDER MATCH:
Wardlow (c) vs. Christian Cage

Heat Index = Lukewarm
Prediction: Wardlow wins.

Thoughts: Part of me says Christian Cage would be a better fit as champion. The more logical part of me, though, says you have to keep this title on Wardlow to avoid him going after MJF’s world title any time soon. They’ve been playing hot potato with it, so I’m not exactly confident, but I’ll go with Wardlow retaining, despite the advantage Cage has with Luchasaurus by his side, as he’ll inevitably interfere. A title change wouldn’t be the craziest thing, though…

AEW INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 21-MAN BLACKJACK BATTLE ROYALE MATCH:
Orange Cassidy (c) vs. 20 competitors TBD

Heat Index = Hot
Prediction: Orange Cassidy wins.

Thoughts: Orange Cassidy has been among my top favorites from the very start. Toss in a battle royal with the potential for surprises, possibly a title change, and the track record of his great performances with this title, and you’ve got a winning recipe for sure. This should be a lot of fun. I’m surprised they’re going with Blackjack Battle Royale instead of Casino Battle Royale. Maybe they’re ditching that setup?

AEW WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Toni Storm

Heat Index = Freezing
Prediction: Jamie Hayter wins.

Thoughts: I feel like 5 events have gone by with me saying the same “move on and feud with some new people” comment about this. All we’ve seen is Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter, Toni Storm, Saraya and Ruby Soho with some appearances from Hikaru Shida and that is it. All before that, it was just the same thing, but with Thunder Rosa. I couldn’t care less. Storm might win and they’d have the same damn feud anyway, so it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not even going to bother to watch it, most likely.

ANARCHY IN THE ARENA MATCH:
Blackpool Combat Club (Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta) vs. The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson and “Hangman” Adam Page)

Heat Index = Scorching
Prediction: Blackpool Combat Club wins.

Thoughts: This is going to kick ass. I’m about 50/50 on the prediction, as I tend to lean more toward babyfaces winning these types of matches, but it feels like BCC should come out victorious to keep the feud going. Win-win, as far as I’m concerned. Give me more.

AEW TBS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
Jade Cargill (c) vs. Taya Valkyrie

Heat Index = Chilly
Prediction: Jade Cargill wins.

Thoughts: Taya Valkyrie does stand a chance to win this title, but I feel like all the momentum is gone. Now, it just seems like she’s the latest person to be fed to Cargill and there’s not much more to it than that. Basically, I’m imagining if I don’t pay attention to this, I won’t feel like I’ll have missed much.

TRIOS MATCH:
Ethan Page and The Gunns (Austin Gunn and Colten Gunn) vs. The Hardy Party (Isiah Kassidy, Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy)

Heat Index = Freezing
Prediction: The Hardy Party wins.

Thoughts: What a waste of time. This didn’t need to be on this card. I’d have skipped it even if it were on Dynamite or Rampage. Totally unnecessary. All these factions Matt Hardy’s been associated with since his debut in AEW have been a bust.

UNSANCTIONED MATCH:
Adam Cole vs. Chris Jericho

Heat Index = Lukewarm
Prediction: Adam Cole wins.

Thoughts: Eh…look. Cole and Jericho are great. But there’s something about this feud that hasn’t fully worked for me. I think if I had not watched any of the setup whatsoever, and was just told these two were having a match, I’d be more excited than I am after having watched all the build. I’m also confused about why this is an Unsanctioned Match instead of a Lights Out match. Are we getting away from that branding, too? Just like Casino Battle Royale? I’ll go with Cole winning, but mostly because I’m hoping this feud doesn’t limp on. Sabu is a weird addition I didn’t see coming, I’ll say that.

OVERALL PPV:
How excited am I for the event as a whole?

Heat Index = Hot

Thoughts: Some parts of this leave much to the imagination and I would be happier if they weren’t on the show and this ended earlier. Other parts are super cool and I’m really looking forward to them. Overall, the balance is much more on the positive than the negative. This should far outclass NXT Battleground and likely WWE Night of Champions, too.
