Former AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland has experienced a tibia fracture while fighting Malakai Black in a Barbed Wire Steel Cage Match at the AEW Double Or Nothing 2024 pay-per-view occasion.
On a recent episode of the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, Copeland discussed his injury and the surgery he underwent. Highlights from their conversation can be found below:
Regarding the mishap, he said: “It was less of a leap and more of a fall. I convinced myself I could do it, sure, 15 feet? But then I remembered, I’m 50 years old. Good thing is, it was not my Achilles because it was the same leg that I tore my Achilles on before. Maybe it’s an ankle sprain or a bone bruise, I thought. I managed to finish the match, got to the back. But when I walked straight into emergency, they were shocked. I was shocked too when they said, ‘You have a broken leg.’ So here we are. However, I rose above the pain and I completed that match.”
Speaking about his recovery process, he explained: “I had a successful surgery on Monday. It was a little tricky because of where the fracture is, right above the ankle joint, known as a peon fracture. The cartilage between your ankle and your tibia and fibula was compressed, and then the break occurred. They compacted it all with the plate and the screws during the surgery. I haven’t seen the X-ray and I am not keen on it either. However, this injury made me discover DoorDash, it’s pretty cool. I also did a lot of reading and played Dr. Mario.”
